The ritual of making and drinking coffee is a comforting and peaceful part of my morning routine. Coffee has been a social and cultural beverage for centuries, and let’s be honest it is also the fuel that I need to get going and power me through the day.
This Starbucks copycat recipe is not only made with very simple ingredients to make but it is also the most delicious and healthy homemade mocha latte I have ever tasted. Remember to print off the full recipe card at the bottom of this post.
What is in a Starbucks Mocha Latte?
A mocha latte, like you would find at Starbucks, is a coffee-based beverage that typically consists of espresso, steamed milk, chocolate syrup or powder, and whipped cream. It is similar to a latte, but with the addition of chocolate flavoring.
For this healthy homemade recipe you will only need three ingredients to make your delicious latte. No need for a fancy espresso machine. You can use any strong coffee that you like. I primarily use my regular drip machine but you could use a french press or even cold brew coffee.

How do you make a healthy copycat Starbucks Mocha Latte?
Making your own drinks or food at home can be more cost-effective and healthier than purchasing them from a coffee shop or restaurant. So, if you enjoy coffee and chocolate flavors, a mocha latte can be a delicious treat to try making at home. You can find all of the ingredients for this easy recipe at your local grocery store.
You will need:
- Your favorite home-brewed coffee
- Chocolate Protein Powder (I prefer Vital Protein Chocolate Collagen)
- Your choice of vanilla creamer, whole milk, oat milk, soy milk, or heavy whipping cream
- A spoon or tiny immersion blender (I use this one from Amazon)
- A beautiful coffee mug that makes you smile
How do you make a healthy latte?
The first step to making this latte recipe healthier than a standard Starbucks Mocha Latte is by using the chocolate collagen.
Collagen is a protein that is naturally found in the body and is a key component of our skin, hair, nails, and bones. Adding collagen to your coffee is believed to have potential benefits for your skin, joint, and bone health.
When collagen is ingested, it may support the production of collagen in your own body, which can help improve skin elasticity and hydration, reduce wrinkles, and support joint and bone health. Additionally, collagen is a good source of protein, which can help keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer.
The Starbucks version will be full of chocolate sauce to get the signature chocolatey flavor. Using the protein powder is the best part of this simple recipe.
Secondly, when you are making a latte at home you have complete control over the ingredients. You can choose to use organic coffee beans, plant-based milk, and natural sweeteners, which can all contribute to a healthier and more wholesome drink.
Keep this in mind when you are choosing what type of cream or milk to add to your healthy mocha latte. You can use my homemade french vanilla coffee creamer or perhaps choose a plant-based milk that does not contain any added sweeteners.

Step One:
Add your chocolate protein powder to your coffee mug. I used two tablespoons which is half of a serving of the Vital Chocolate Collagen Protein Powder. Remember, no additional cocoa powder or fancy mocha sauce required.
Step Two:
Pour in your delicious hot coffee. I use a drip coffee machine because I enjoy the convenience and minimal effort that it takes to make the coffee. You simply fill the machine with water and coffee grounds, press a button, and wait for the coffee to brew. Or if your machine allows you can set an automatic timer that will set the coffee to brew and be ready for you when you wake up in the morning. Use your preferred method for making coffee. You can use cold brew for an iced option if you prefer a cold drink.
Step Three:
Use your small whisk, or a spoon, to mix the cup of coffee and chocolate protein powder together. These two basic ingredients give the best results.
The whisk I am using is intended to be utilized as a milk frother but the tool is incredibly versatile. With my copycat Starbucks Mocha Latte it does an excellent job of blending together the protein powder and coffee so that the powder is entirely dissolved.
A small whisk or milk frother is completely optional. I have used a spoon many times when I am mixing my ingredients and it works well. Either way you will end up with a decadent coffee drink.
Step Four:
Add in your healthy creamer. I recommend adding one to two tablespoons depending on your personal preferences.
The type of creamer that you choose will determine, in large part, how healthy of a mocha latte you are making.
A popular option for a healthy creamer is almond milk. Almond milk is a popular dairy-free creamer option that is low in calories and sugar.
Another great option, and one that I particularly love, is coconut milk. Coconut milk is a dairy-free creamer option that is low in calories and sugar, and can add a rich and creamy texture to coffee. It also contains healthy fats that can help to keep you feeling full and satisfied.
Any creamer you choose that is low in calories and added sugars, and preferably made from natural and wholesome ingredients will be a wonderful addition toward making this copycat Starbucks Mocha Latte a healthier option.
Healthy Homemade Mocha Latte
After a final mix you will have created a healthy and delicious mocha latte that contains the bitterness of coffee mixed together with the sweetness of chocolate. A combination of flavors that is very satisfying and appealing.
The warm and creamy texture of a mocha latte is comforting and indulgent, making it an outstanding choice for a cozy and relaxing way to start your morning.
